Hard Hats
Have you checked your Hard Hat lately?
While all helmets are made to Australian Standards there are two important aspects that need to be checked regularly to ensure the reduction of head injury risk.
- The outer shell which resists and deflects blows to the head
- The inner suspension system which acts as a shock absorber
There is no "use by" date on a helmet however your helmet will not last forever.
Replace your hard hat when:
- Cracks appear in the shell
- The shiny surface appears dull or chalky
- The shell becomes brittle
- Impact has been made with the helmet surface
- The suspension becomes brittle
- One or more of the suspension mounts break off
- The suspension will no longer hold securely to the head
- The cradling straps break or become worn
- After impact that would have caused the wearer injury as the integrity of the structure will have been weakened
- After maximum of 5 years of service life or sooner
Care for your hard hat
Do not treat your head protection gear with disrespect or lack of care. IT CAN SAVE YOUR LIFE!
- CHECK both the helmet shell and harness for signs of WEAR and TEAR
- STORE in a cool, dry place when not in use
Other helpful info about hard hats
All hard hats sold within Australia are required to meet the needs of industry in Australia as listed in the Australian Standards AS/NZS 1801.
What Standards apply?
- These Standards have specific requirements for protective helmets which protect the wearer's head from falling objects and debris in the workplace and reduce the rise of injury.
- These Standards specify requirements for the construction and materials of the helmet shell and head harness, mechanical strength of the shell and finish of the helmet.
What is the "in use" life span of a hard hat?
Australian Standards require that each helmet is marked with the month and year of manufacture. This should NOT be used as a basis for determining the life of an industrial safety helmet.
